This passage relates to me because in Islam which is my religion, women are required to wear a hijab and cover their whole body with loose clothes, or even cover their faces because it is believed that women have seductive beauty.

In the story mother tongue the author as a chinese American explains how she has to switched her language between her mother and others. When she's in a conversation with her mom she speaks broken English. But when she's with her friends or classmates she speaks standard English.

The Kitchen of Meaning

In this quotation, Barthes explains the purpose of reading from his own point of view. He tells us that we should carefully read between the lines because the writing conventions are there to make us feel, hear or picture what the reader wants us know.
